We have been breeding quarter horse for over 25 years. One of the main ingredients of our horses is Mayflower. The Western Horseman did an article on Mayflower in 1957 called "Mayflower--The Matriarch of the Breed." Mayflower had two daughters by Beetch's Yellow Jacket; Lady Coolidge and Dixie Beach. Lady Coolidge being the dam of horses like Bert, JB King, and Angle; Dixie Beach being the dam of Little Jodie, M's Tom Benear, Little Dixie Beach, Little Mayflower, and Harlan, just to name a few. We have concentrated on these bloodlines with great results.
We started off with Roman Nose bred horses. My Uncle Francis Coulter and Dale Woodrell were the last owners of Roman Nose. Thanks to them we got started on the right track. Roman Nose #1522 was a 1940 son of Bert #227 out of a daughter of Midnight. We bred some of our Roman Nose mares to Frank Clark's Roman Mac and we also bred a mare to Unimac, a 3/4 brother to Roman Mac, the result being Cherokee Uni Max.
We then bought a 23-year-old stud named Magic Joe Reed. The horse was
100% foundation with bloodlines like Little King #171, Joe Reed, King, etc. We thought he would be a great out cross with the Bert bloodlines...and it worked.
Then we purchased some Pudden Head stock. Mr. Gerald Fontenot owned a son of Pudden Head named Puddens Blue Boy. "Blue" was old and sterile when we found out about him. So Mr. Fontenot helped us locate several of his daughters which we purchased. Then we found out about a horse named Cherry Joe Pudden (a grandson of Pudden Head). We purchased him when he was 20 years old. Pudden Head was by Little Jodie out of a daughter of Bert. Thus the Bert and Little Jodie cross.
Then we purchased Roys Black Bert, a line bred River Bert stud by Dustin R Bert that is 32.5% Bert (River Bert being the last foal sired by Bert). At the same time we also purchased Hank Harlan Tyree, a line bred Harlan stud that is 37.5% Harlan from Bob Robey (the owner of Harlan).
Dick Williams of Wilcox, Arizona, had Hank Harlander (a son of Harlander out of a daughter of Roper Boy that was out of a daughter of One Eyed Waggoner). The horse was 21 years old when Dick let us take him. But unfortunately due to health problems with the horse, we were not able to get any mares in foal with him. So Dick located Hanks Scat Cat (a son of Hank Harlander) and we purchased him. Dick also helped us find Wagons Sammy Gray, a son of A War Wagon.
We also acquired a granddaughter of Leo that we bred to Bill Fletcher's almost 47% Joe Reed II stud, Will it be Leo (the highest percentage Joe Reed II horse alive). We got Yeah Leo out of that deal. Thanks, Larry Wing.
